  • Building a raised garden bed

    Posted on : 29-05-2020 | By : Rohinton Gatta | In : News & Updates

Now is the time to start prepping for garden season. A project you may have been considering is raised garden beds. There’s lots of advantages to raised garden beds. They are great for growing small plots of veggies and flowers. Your plants are closer to you and easier to work with. They help keep weeds out of the soil. They’re better for drainage and help prevent soil compaction. They also help prevent pests such as snails and slugs from getting at your plants.

First you need to plan a spot for your garden bed. Keep in mind the type of plants you’d like to plant in it. How much sun do they need? How does this garden bed work with the rest of the space and how you’ll use it.

Decide on a material for your garden bed. The two most common types are wood and stone. There’s plus and minuses to either option. Stone is far more durable and long lasting but wood is a much quicker and cheaper solution. If you’re going to go with wood, educate yourself. Treated wood will last longer but some treated woods do have chemicals in them that will release into the soil.

Also decide on a height. You could create walls or small living pillars that frame a patio.

Prepare your base and clear any sod and weed beneath where you’re putting your garden bed. You’ll also want to lay a barrier cloth of some kind to prevent weeds from growing into your new raised bed.

Build your box. Be it with wood or stone. Make it level and fill it with a mix of high grade soil and compost to give your plants the best start.

Raised garden beds are a weekend project you can easily tackle and are easier to maintain than a traditional garden bed. Contact one of our locations today for the materials you need to get started now!
